On 28 March, the next child-led regional consultation was organized to inform children about the development of the CRC Optional Protocol on free pre-primary and secondary education, bringing together participants from European countries. Moderated by child advisors and delegates, the session featured presentations and an interactive discussion exploring key questions related to access to education. Participants highlighted numerous barriers that prevent children from attending school, such as hidden costs including transportation, uniforms, books, meals, and exam fees, as well as economic pressures that force some children to work. This is particularly relevant due to the cost-of-living crises hitting all Europe.

The discussion underscored that the Optional Protocol is essential to ensuring education is free not only on paper but also in practice. Participants also shared ideas on how children can support change, including raising awareness in their communities, sharing personal experiences, and taking part in youth groups, campaigns, and decision-making processes. The session closed with a strong reminder that children’s voices are vital in shaping effective policies and that education must be a basic right, accessible to every child without barriers or discrimination.
