Child-Led Canada & Latin America Regional Consultation, Moderated by CAT
On 28 February 2026, two child-led regional consultations were organized to inform children about the development of the CRC Optional Protocol on free preprimary and secondary education. The first session brought together children from Canada, Brazil, and several Latin American countries, with interpretation provided between Spanish, Portuguese, and English. The second session was held exclusively in Spanish, allowing participants to engage more directly in a single language. Moderated by CAT members Dulce, Karen, and Sarah, the consultations explored key questions related to education and its broader impact on children’s lives.
The discussion brought out a range of obstacles that keep many children from going to school, such as financial pressures, inadequate school facilities, discrimination, long travel distances, and limited mental health support. Participants also shared ideas on how children can help shape change, including speaking about their experiences, raising awareness, and creating spaces where young people can take part in decision making. The session closed with a strong reminder that children’s perspectives are vital and that education must be free, accessible, and of good quality for all.
The summary report is available in English.
